Assorted definition and configuration changes to support AIX: 

alloca() has been replace by malloc() and free(),
Use of __progname eliminated,
GNU compliant malloc() wrapper added,
RLIMIT_* definition use controlled by #ifdef's,
Changed some data types, and conditionally added some #includes.
